John Toates is the owner and a principal of John Toates Architecture and Design which he founded in 2012 after a very successful career with Peter Zimmerman Architects, where he designed and managed dozens of traditional and historic residential projects. Before PZA, John worked at another respected Philadelphia firm and at architecture firms in southern Connecticut where he was raised. At JTAD, John is personally invested in all projects, bringing his expertise and passion for traditional architectural fundamentals, details and materials to design timeless, elegant and appropriate structures that embrace and enhance their surroundings. John has a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Syracuse University, where he won a Dean’s Citation Award for his thesis design and also studied abroad in Florence, Italy. He is a registered architect in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Georgia, and a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Institute of Classical Architecture, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the Lower Merion Conservancy, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and Cub Scout Pack 284. John was formerly the Consulting Architect for Tredyffrin Township’s Historical Commission and has been a guest speaker for the Lower Merion Conservancy’s Historic Preservation Series, and the Radnor Historical Society. When he’s not working, John spends time with his family and maintains an avid interest in the decorative arts, gardening and raising chickens, historical preservation, and traditional wooden boat building. Always passionate about history and cultural influences on design, he also values the time he spends living and studying in Italy.

Owner and Principal
John Toates began his career in architecture at several architectural firms in southern Connecticut before relocating to the Philadelphia area in 1992 to work at two firms that specialized in traditional residential architectural projects. In 2012 John formed John Toates Architecture and Design, and as the owner and principal of the firm, John is personally involved in every detail of the project and provides a unique concierge approach to all aspects of design.
