1835 Ship Captain’s Home
Project Description
Featured is the expansion and renovation to the 1835 Sherwood-Banks house. Additions to the historic core created a new kitchen and great room wing with an additional bedroom and master suite above. Vintage Hopes steel casement windows with red brass cremone hardware, originally manufactured in England, were sourced and restored for the dining room. The historic core was stripped to the framing and all of the original trim was carefully removed, repaired and re-installed. The original wood floors, under several later layers of flooring and were carefully restored to bring out the natural aged patina of the wood.

Interior spaces blend Alex Vervoordt inspired aesthetics with historically correct Federal details. Uncompromising attention to details and simple unadorned raw plaster finishes make the spaces both historic and modern. The additions were designed to respect the home’s rich history, while also being highly customized to the European outdoor centric lifestyle that the family of five enjoy. Organic gardens and orchards planned for the surrounding acres will supply establishments with produce. The changes and improvements to the house and site add another layer of history to the property and celebrate the different aesthetic periods the house has enjoyed and ensure the promise of a bright future for generations to come.
