Bungalow Renovation

Bungalow Renovation

PROject description

This quaint cottage has stood in what is now Avondale neighborhood of Solomons Island, MD for nearly a century. The original house, along with many others from the same period were constructed partially with timbers salvaged from a large hotel that had burned down. The rafters and roof sheathing still retained smoke and char from that fire hidden behind the interior finishes. To preserve the home and weave it thoughtfully into a new neighborhood concept developed between JTAD and the local developer Avondale Cottages LLC, we looked to return the exterior appearance to fit within the typology of pre-war bungalows while updating the interior to function to serve a more practical & contemporary lifestyle.

The front porch was un-enclosed to reveal the structure’s full façade and create a welcoming sheltered space along the street. Moving inside, the first floor opens up into a single large living space featuring vintage hardware and storied millwork in lieu of the 4 tiny original spaces. The upstairs was re-arranged to accommodate a second private bathroom to serve the rear bedroom. A generous screen porch was added along the rear of the house along with a side entrance, mudroom and ground floor powder room. Encompassing less than 1,000 sf of enclosed space, the restored bungalow balances comfortable lifestyle amenities without unnecessary space and functions.
