Grover Cottage
project description
Situated on a gable fence-lined street known as “Bungalow Row” for the quaint cottages it houses, this renovation focused on updating and modernizing what was already existed. The renovated cottage sits street-facing with a welcoming open porch topped with a classic triangular roof featuring a three-windowed dormer into the second story. This porch had been enclosed at some point in time to provide additional interior space. The exterior vinyl siding was removed and replaced with clapboard siding made from a composite cementitious product that matches the appearance of classic clapboard siding but without the maintenance issues.

Modern insulated windows replaced the earlier aluminum replacement windows that had been installed when the original wood windows were removed. The interior echoes the simple timelessness of the exterior—the thought being to preserve the character of the original materials and layout as much as possible, while improving the functionality of the house. A rear porch was reconfigured to create an effective mudroom and allowed a proper suite of closets in one of the 2 first flor bedrooms.
In order to offset the loss of interior space when the enclosed porch was re-made as open space, the cramped attic space was opened up and benefited from the addition of a large shed dormer and a full bathroom. The entire interior surface of the upstairs suite is clad in painted ship lap boards and antique flooring. The space is now able to function as either a master bedroom, guest suite, game room or home office depending on the specific needs of the current and future owners. As a result of all of this work, the scale and nature of the original structure was retained and the original charm that its surroundings are retained while accommodating and updating the home to accommodate the contemporary functional needs of society.
